The Flood, The Death, and The Wardrobe

That would be a great book name, come to think of it.

I’ve been unplugged –  and it all started with the earthquake.

The earthquake itself didn’t cause the trouble, but that marked the beginning of a streak of misfortune.  During my visit south, a hurricane came through. Upon our return, my fiance’s brother passed away, prompting a visit to his family in Newport, RI.  While we were there, our house flooded…just the basement, which was more than enough, thanks.

We’re renovating in other parts of the house and had many things shoved into the basement that typically wouldn’t be there – all of my winter clothes included. Since we were out of town, we obviously weren’t here to get anything out of the path.  Though the recent tragedy has reinforced an understanding that it really is just all “stuff”, and there are things much more important than stuff.

This area floods once every thirty years, on average – and it happened during a time that we were out of reach and couldn’t do a damn thing about it.

Today marks the day of the banishment of further bad luck.  The house is finally back to normal, and clean! But man, what a lot of work the past few weeks have been.

Moving forward-  we have an estate to manage and I have a wardrobe to re-build.  As if three years without a dress code at my previous job didn’t do enough damage to my style (going to work in gym clothes or just whateverwaslyingonthefloor was way too easy), losing most of my cold weather duds has finished it off. Most of the items now in my closet are either worn out or never worn, and the disorganization has been the culprit of more frustration than necessary – so this re-vamp is a good thing.   It’s just too bad I can’t get the insurance to cover it!

As with any new endeavor, I start with a bit of research online. This article by youlookfab regarding “Wardrobe Capsules” seems like a good place to start, so today I’m going to start planning the outline for my new wardrobe.
